There seem to be a lot less people cruising the plant section, and I like a lot of replies, so I'm posting this here; please don't get upset.

Which plants don't need anything more than gravel to grow into? I know that some plants just have roots to anchor and don't get many nutrients from them. I don't want to use a substrate other than gravel because it would probably get sucked through the grate on my undergravel filtration. I am assuming that Java moss, fern, and anubias nana don't need a substrate since they can grow into wood or rocks.. what others?

Thanks!

I dunno either  , but I really want to know the answer to that question as well! (I did ask the same question in the plant section, but as part of another thread).

Vallis, crypts, ludwigia, egeria densa and several others will grow just fine in gravel as long as there is sufficient light and nutrients in the water.

not sure but sand is a better subtrate for plants and a UG filter isn't something to be proud of it's high mantenance, messy and hell to remove and not much good. u should get urself an external fislter and most plants need some form of nutriant so plant feed used onece a week of every 2 weeks would do most plants.

plants draw nutriants from the water as there's not much in the substrate and if u do have plants u wanna get some fine gravle or sand. course gravel will not be good for most plants

the down side is your ug filter.. removing the UG filter and you could have almost any plants..

its not the gravel that is a limiting factor.. you'll need to feed the root with something, a UG filter would suck everything out of the gravel and feed the green algae floating in the water..

if you would like to keep the UG filter and keep plants, try using ricca as a lawn plant ( its a floating plant that you can be tied down ) some java fern and anubias.
