These plants were originally in a 20gallon tank with about 2 watts per gallon in a very dark room. The tank started leaking so we moved everything to the 10 gallon tank, which has just under 2 watts per gallon, in a room with a giant north-facing window that has the curtains open all day. So they get plenty of light. Now they're turning yellow-could it be from transplanting or do I need to add something? The plants are anubias nana, amazon sword (a small variety) and cryptocoryne wendtii. It seems like all of them are getting a little yellow, but I'm most surprised about the anubias since they were really taking off before we did the switch.

btw we did start with a clean tank (used the filter and medium from the old tank though).

i know i might get killed for saying this...
but if the tank has plants ONLY try adding some plant food... Miracle Gro All Purpose plant food
from my research and the fact that photsynthetic systems are just about identical across plant phila then this would work...

Bracing for the Flame....

Well I read somewhere that some plants leaves turn yellow if there is too much nutrient in the water. I dont know if thats for all plants or just certain types of plants but thats what i read. If you arent using any nutrients at all then this isnt your problem

Its probably a nutrient deficiency, do you fertilise this tank or have a reasonable fishload? also bear in mind 2 watts over a ten gallon tank may not be enough light even for these low light plants, this would be considered a very low light tank, the watts per gallon rule breaks down on very large tanks and very small tanks of about 10 gallons and below.

Thanks everyone. I thought I set it to notify me but apparently not-I wasn't ignoring you all. lol.

I do have fish in the tank-9 of them. They are small-5 pristella tetras, 2 glo lites and 2 cherry barbs. Like I said, I did start with very clean gravel and only used the filter media for cycling so everything had no nutrients for a while. I would think that by now there would be plenty. Should I feed more often? I'm feeding about every 3-4 days right now because it's pretty warm in here.

afa wattage, my other tank (20 gallon long) was 2 watts per gallon and this one is 1.8 so the wattage is really no different other than the fact that this one gets lots of natural light during the day. So they actually get much more light than they did before. I expected my crypts to suffer (although they were huge and didn't suffer too much) but was shocked to see the anubias turn yellow as it seemed to be such a hardy plant. I have one in my beta tank which gets only natural light right now (it's too hot to turn the light on) and it's doing fine.

I bet it's the lack of nutrients. I might start every other day feeding again.

Hi Gale,

Without knowing your water parimeters e.g, nitrate, phosphate, co2?, potassium, I would hazard a guess at an iron defficiency. But first get some kits and check your levels. Add a little of whats missing, a little at a time, then check results over the next couple of days. If its iron you should see the results very quickly;often in a few hours of dosing.

Dont use Miracle Gro All Purpose plant food or any other house plant fertilisers. This will only lead to algae problems.

You can get all the fertilsers and test kits online from Aquaessentials.

Kind regards,

Andy Gardner
