Could someone give me advice on new plants to buy for my new tank.

I am going to buy either a 5ft or 6ft tank & it will host my plant eating 9 inch Clown Sucker Plec & 4 Kissing Gourami's.

I'm going to use sand & plenty of bogwood plus a big fake tree stump. I'm buying bulk small pieces of bogwood (around 2kg) plus I already have a large piece I will use. The plan is to stack the bogwood & perhaps plant some large plants so that they shoot up through it.

Any ideas on plants that the plec will struggle to up-root?

I am tempted to plant some dwarf hairgrass around the front, if I can get hold of it.

Tricky one, I know people have trouble with plecos and plants. One word of warning hairgrass is very trick to grow and unless you've got a top notch setup I think you might struggle to grow it.

I've been reading abit about it & it sounds like it's difficult. Besides the tank will hold a fair few fish so perhaps not the best of choices, when it's difficult.

I'll show you the tank with the current setup. I will perhaps change a few things as I go along.

If that's my tank set-up, I'd go for java ferns, anubias, and moss. There's many varieties of ferns, anubias and moss --- you could mix and match then, and come up with an impressive planted tank. Plus, they all attach to bogwood, your plec won't be able to uproot/untangle them.

I'll have a look on some plant sites. I'm not too upto date with plants.

Kissing gouramis are notorious vegetarians and like a large pleco probably not the best candidates to go into a planted tank. Your best bet is to stick with the very tough species like anubias and java fern. At least that is my recomendation.

Good luck. Kissing gouramis are great fish.

llj :)

Ok thanks, I'll buy some of these when I get my new tank.

I've seen a huge piece of bogwood on ebay with the fern on it. I may buy it yet.

This might help...Anubias listing, Ferns listing

(I am not affiliated with the site, but they have the pics and list of almost all of the plants in just one page...It saves you time from jumping from one site to another).

Thanks fishkiller, that gives me an idea of what I can have. I'm hoping to use a sand bottom for my tank with 2kg of bogwood, hopefully I can get some java moss to stick to it like I used to aswell. I'll have to take a few pictures when I got my tank all setup.
