Hi, I had a good look at the new plants in my tank earlier, they have been in there about a week now and are doing pretty well. I noticed on most of them that they have very thin pale root-like structures sprouting out of the stems and mainly making for the sand. I assume this is a good thing and a sign that my plants are growing :D But I'm not very experienced with aquarium plants so I thought I'd better make sure ;)

They're root-like because they're roots. :) I kinda wish they wouldn't do that... I don't like the way it looks. But you can always snip them off. In the case of anacharis, if you snip off the roots early you can prevent another plant from growing out of the stem at that point (if that's what you want).

I'd rather I have to control the plants' growth than have to buy new ones due to them not growing ;) I'm really glad they've taken as I was a bit uncertain because my tank doesn't really have a lot of light in it and I just bought a generic "30 inch collection" from Java Plants. After buying it I actually looked at the light requirements of the plants they were sending me and found out that most of them needed bright to very bright light to survive! I thought they'd at least include SOME plants that required moderate light requirements

I would like to put another light fitting in there eventually but if my plants are already doing well there's no rush as I need to save money for driving lessons!
