Plants In Tank

hi guy got a 34 gallon tank wit a very light gravel nearly like sand in bottom. iv have bought two plants before but my fish destroyed them in days . im wondering am i doing anything wrong because they come in little pots and i just buried the pots in the gravel. i also bought plant food but i see post about co2 pumps so am i doing that wrong too
