my substrate is simply "play sand" from lowes. i've read that its not that great for plants, but i've also read about using small bits of clay to put in the sand near the plants for fertilizer. how credible is this claim? is there anything else thats cheap and effective? the only kinds of plants i'm planning on getting are several java ferns, so any advice that pertains to them would be helpfull, thanks!

Clay wont help much, and it depends what type you have and where you get it to weather it will even be safe. Just use root tabs :good: .

well i have sand in one of my tanks it is heavily planted and they are doing fine, i have swords, java ferns and other plants which i do not know the name of.
