I know these are all hardy plants that would probably just be fine in a bucket of tap water and normal daylight, BUT... it isn't much trouble to go a bit further, so please advise.......................

I have just finished sorting out my main community tank and i have some excess plants i recently bought that i cant fit in tank (you will know why when you see the pics lol)

The are moss balls (quite a few about 20), Java Fern (about 8 bunches) and some Hygrophila

I am going to set up a new planted tank when i get back from holiday in about a week. I think its only fair to the plants, as i have a few more when i didnt need to, that i do a complete new set-up, what do you think :hyper:

I am going to put all these excess plants in a "fish friendly" bin thats about 2 foot high. It will be 50% tap water and 50% tank water. I am going to put a fluorescent tube over a pain of glass and the person looking after my fish can turn it on in the morning and off at night

QUESTIONS

1. Should i facilitate some water flow? I can quite easily stick a Fluval 1 or 2 in there?

2. Should i add some of my normal fertiliser (Seachem liquid)?

3. Should i supply a source of ammonia to replace what they would be getting in my main tank from my fish (i was thinking a few catfish pellets or something?)

cheers

PS - temporarily sticking them in my main tank (floating about) isnt really a good option as it will rob the other plants of too much light

Remeber they are tropical plants and will need warmth and some sort of oxygenation. Id add a heater (if the room isnt warm enough) and an air stone.

thanks

well, the temperature of un-heated water in my flat doesnt really get below 72F, so i was hoping to not use a heater, but i do have heaters i can use.

should be ok. i had a couple weeks ago someone give me the wrong address to ship plants too. they were in the mail 9 days before coming back. some of the plans were dead but most was alive. the java fern was fine. if you are adding light its going to give you a better chance. 72f should be fine. if you have a power head or something i would add it giving it some water movement.

I think the Java fern and moss balls would be fine in an un-attended bucket. I have a clear plastic bucket which helps when I've had to store plants for a little while.

You could also consider leaving the plants unplanted in your existing setup? Maybe leave the moss balls and java fern in the bucket with some good natural light and the less hardy ones either floating, or weighted in bunches in your existing tank?

Isn't it considered good luck to keep marimo balls in a jar in the sunlight? I think they'll be fine.
