oops, I ordered an 85 plant collection from Java last Thursday - they are here already! Am not prepared cos I need some more gravel to build up the back of the tank (and some larger stones to hold it in). Can I just drop the plants in the tank or should I pot them up together or plant them and replant when I get the gravel?

Hi Andi,

I'd leave any pots untill ready any where in the tank, and those in bunches poke into the gravel where deep enough and use the weights. Keep them all in one area out of the way where from where they'll eventually go ( if you have room )- untill you've sorted out the rest of the gravel (well washed!) when it should be easy to move them to your banked area.

Though Rose may have a better idea?

btw don't forget they'll need about 10hrs light a day now

:)

txs WWW, the only time you don't want a speedy delivery is when you get one :sly: . I've got almost 2 inches of substrate but am thinking of putting them all in pots (time to kill  ) so as I can move em around a bit. Will they be alright in the water? Am adding about 2 galls of my old tank each day? Oh, and soaking em in snail killer first

I think Rose says plants grow better in a good substrate inc laterite.

I keep some plants in pots in the wadding and add a plant fertalizer tab every few months which seems to work OK and as you say allows you to move them about if you want to.

Though if you're building banking held back by stones/rocks the plants may do better planted in the substrate, check with Rose as to what would be the best mix for the sustrate.

They should be fine in the water - better than no water at all lol

maybe keep some eg. taller ones or more expensive ones in your main tank? I think some plants can take a while to settle into new water parameters, even dying down a bit untill coming good again.

Hope that helps till Rose gets here

:)

Thanks for the info and link. I think I'll leave them potted till I get the substrate sorted out then plant them in the substrate. Would love to get a couple of flowering plants in there (maybe cordon them off from the sd's  )
