Hi all,

I'd like to put some plants into my African Cichlid tank, but I'm having trouble selecting types that the fish won't rip to pieces! What sort of plants do people use please?

Thanks,

Irf.

its trial and error really try tough ones like java fern, anubuas, crinium

none worked for me as they eat them

see how u get on

Yes, so far I've had similar results. I've tried java fern and anubias (the small leaved one), and also tiger vallisneria. I'm going to try some other type of Vallis (possibly the giant one) because I've been told that if the leaves are thicker and tougher they don't bother. I was also going to get some Salvinia Natans, just to see if floating plants suffered the same fate.

It's annoying really, as one of my friends here who also has Africans doen't have this problem at all. Maybe I'm not feeding them enough....

Hmm - we'll see.

Ive kept Anubias and Vallis with my Africans... the Vallis got shredded to peices within a cppl of days but the Anubias hasnt been touched and is growing nicely.

I've tried all sorts of plants with my Cichlids over the years, the only ones I had any luck with were the floating ones (I don't know the name but they're very common), problem I had though was they impeded the light so I gave up on them. One variety that's 100% fullproof though and can stand up to even an Oscar are called "plastic", these are readily available and will even survive if left floating for long periods of time ;)

Thanks to all that have posted.

I'm gonna look for Anubias Congensis, and also try some Salvinia Natans (floating). Failing that I'll try plastic, but the ones I've seen and the few I've tried look quite poor really.

Regards,

Irf.
