I am going to have a 55g cichlid tank. I have pulverized limestone substrate and what I was told is ocean rock in it. What plants can be grown in limestone? And would moss survive on the rocks in this kind of tank?

Would maybe some val and moss work? What else would be possible?

I forgot... Lake Malawi cichlids are what I am planning on going with.

I need suggestions. I have done google, but I guess I am not using the right search words to get the info I need.

Thanks for looking and helping! :good:

I saw a rift setup with a single (maybe two) 'anubias barteria' plants attached to some stone at the bottom. It looked like a nice splash of colour without being over the top. Anubias may be an option, as it's leaves are not as thin as some others plants, and so might do in a tank of fish that would quite like to eat a plant or two. I would wait for other advice though.

you will need to try it and see, Most Cichlids wont eat Anubias, Java Ferns etc...but im nit guaranteeing it lol

I guess I can put them so that they can be easily removed if they need to be removed. I will have to plan the scape so that it will work with or without plants. That way I won't have to re do everything if they do have to be removed.

I guess if it doesn't work I could always put plastic plants in place of the real ones. I just really don't like the look of plastic plants.

I am going to have to do some searching to see if I can find some tanks with real plants to see what they have in them.

Thanks for helping! :good:

If you really have to go for fake plants try and find some silk ones, they're quite realistic (compared to plastic :shifty:)

But I think some val would be alright in there, it's pretty tough.

Will it do well planted in crushed limestone, or would I need to add something to it where the plants are planted?

Thanks :good:
