Hello everyone,

I just wanted to get some preliminary information. When I move home from school I plan on purchasing a very large (125+gallon) aquarium which will possibly house some goldfish.

Since I've enjoyed planted tanks in the past, I'd like to know if there are any hardy plants that will survive goldfish and low-medium light conditions?

Just curious. I posted this question over at coldwater fish as well, to see if they could help as well.

Thank you very much :)

hmmm anubias for low light and the java series of plants ..but wont the goldfish rip the plants apart ? :) haha what about water lilies for that pond feel . :) hehe

I have no clue as to whether or not, those plants will just offer the gold fish a nice salad bar. Those plants come to my mind for low light aquariums and I've kept them before with success. Thanks for the input. We'll see what they say over at coldwater fishes, where put a similar post.

The concept excites me, it is definitely different, especially where I live. Large tanks there are usually devoted to saltwater or very large cichlids, but goldfish have a certain charm.

Thanks

maybe the goldfishes wont touch the anubias :p i hear it taste bad :p i guess anubias will do good in a cold water pond, it can hold 20 deg i believe also take a peep at dwarf sags they can take the tamp too i think and dont really need high light but require a nice fertile substrate :p dunno about the fishes ripping up the sags though.....

The goldfish's current home is in Miami, FL, yes, I have two goldies that already have reserved spots in the new showcase. The temp of that tank stays at around room temperature, which when my mom's in charge is at 72, and when my sister's in charge, at around 77. But the tank stays at a nice, middle of the road, 74, which is on the warm end for goldies, though they're fine. A pond, in Miami, however, would be near 90 in the summer time, so my goldies may be better off. If my 30x16 ft pool can become 90+ degrees, imagine a 1000 gallon pond. The thought of goldies in near 90 degrees of water, in the shade, doesn't inspire confidence. That's the main reason why my goldies are inside, besides the satanic cats, the frogs that are the size of small dogs, and then we have the night creatures..... :shifty: We don't go out at night anymore.

So I think most low light tropical plants, unless they really like heat should be ok in my showcase, in theory. We still have to account for the goldfish, though, so keep opinions coming, I'll be ready to read. Would a goldfish eat Java fern?

:fun:

wow 90 degrees ! almost like my aquarium during noon :p hehee i dont really know if they would eat the java fern... why dont you give it a try ?!?! i hear it taste bad too :p hehehe but goldfishes are known to just rip up the plant without eating it right ?
