Plants Beginner

I am currently in College and am not able to take my 10 gallon tank to school and want to put some live plants in it over the summer. At school I have a small 2.5 gallon tank for my betta fish and I just want to get some suggestions for a few plant species that I could try and suggestions on how to maintain them.
