Planting With Sand

i`m thinking of 1" laterite with 2" of play sand on top. Do i plant the roots into the laterite layer or just into the sand. I`m abit worried about the sand rotting the plants. Should i get a larger grained sand. I was hoping to use play sand as it`s cheap.

Play sand is ok, others have used that before. Just dont get the really really fine sand.
Also, i think 2" of sand will be a lot. You'll have to be very careful and make sure it gets stirred a lot. 2cm would be more than enough.
