When using aquagrit as a substrate in a potentially heavily planted tank is it necessary to use a substrate such as tetraplant (or equivalent)? Thanks

I have not used it but it is supposed to be a complete plant substrate just like tetraplant, so it should be fine on its own. It does lower ph some which can be a good thing.
Welcome to the forum.

I started using Aquagrit when I had to move the tank due to redecorating several months ago. I think it's excellent stuff. Before, I used to have the Tetra Complete Substrate under normal gravel and the Aquagrit is easily as good as that. Being light, though, it can be an absolute swine to get new plants to stay put, but once they've rooted properly, there's no problem.
