I just received my first order of live plants. Included was Ludwiga Natans & Water Wisteria. They came in bundles of six to eight stems, each with roots. When planting them do I leave them bunched together or do I need to leave a little space between each stem? If it makes any difference I'm planting into standard aquarium gravel that's approximately 2".

Leave a little space between each stem when you plant so that light can penetrate the bottom of each stem. Remove the leaves about 2 inches from the bottom of the stem. This will allow the nodes that contained the leaves to develop roots in the substrate. Remove any black or brown growth. Poke a hole in the substrate with your finger and put the naked stem inside, then gently fill in the hole with the gravel.

Gravel is fine as a substrate, but you don't want to be too rough with the planting as it is big and can damage fragile stems if you're not careful.

It is better to leave a space between each stem, so that leaves at the bottom get sufficient light as well. You will be trimming later and the top will grow bushier.

Trim the roots before planting. It stimulates growth.

Crap!, It looks like I've got a lot of replanting to do.

Thanks for the replies.
