Ok, I have very nosey fish and they always uproot plants all around the tank when I don't want them to. I want to have the wonderful planted look (especially giant vallis!) without them always getting uprooted and floating around.

I have come up with an idea that I thought I would pass by you all and see what you think...

I was thinking of putting the plant and it's roots inside a mesh bag that contains eco-complete or other plant substrate, along with a root tab. Then, the mesh bag will be placed in a Gladware mini container (4 oz), that I have punched holes into for root system and shooters, and planted into the substrate.

What do you think? I was thinking it will be a neat idea to try with my larger fish, since they won't be able to move around the heavy container and it will also supplement the plants for optimal growth.

Just an idea, but one I thought I would try out. Anyone else have any experience with attempting to keep plants in the sand with large, robust fish?

Quick edit here: I've always wanted vallis in my tank, but I figured I couldn't have it because of my fish. This tank has given me hope and inspiration. :D

Why not get some of those small unglazed clay pots from garden centre's I use those for tanks with inquisitive fish.

They can be buried and still look good if they are slightly exposed, plus they are heavy so no chance of them floating away.

I'm with Amerce on this one. Use some ceramic/ clay flower pots and put the plant in that. Then put some smooth river rocks or pebbles over the gravel in the pot. The plants should be able to grow up through the gaps in the pebbles. Otherwise you can use shade cloth/ plastic flyscreen and put some of that over the pot. Cut a slit in the mesh and allow the plant to grow through that.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I am definitely going to go with aaronnorth's suggestion and use the net pots. I didn't event think about looking for those on Ebay or anything. I also didn't want to use the clay pots because of their color. I don't want the pots to be seen, basically.
