Planting Bogwood

bought some java fern in the hope of getting it to plant onto my bogwood.

i was told to tie it to the wood with fishing tackle. i have done this but im wondering if the roots attach to the bogwood or do the roots need to be in the gravel?

this is a pic of what its like at the moment.

The roots attach to the wood but it is better to tie them by the rhizome so as to not crush the stems.
