Planting A Small Tank

I recently bought the j&k betta cube and was thinking about planting it up with real plants and adding a few shrimp. I need some advice on planting it up. I have neva been good with plants in my bigger tanks so thought id ask before I even started this time. Plan to have a sand bottom. If anyone has any suggestions on which plants to buy, substrant to use and any fertilisers please let me know would be greatly appreciated.
