Hey,
I'm thinking about starting my first planted tank and I was just wondering if I would need a plant substrate underneath sand? If it is necessary then I shall use it but if not, I would lie to spend the money on other things for my tank.

Josh.

Great! That's good news. 7-10 days to wait until I get my new tank :(

In general it isn't needed aslong as nutrients are in abundance elsewhere..IE the water column, roots tabs are a good fail safe but aslong as your column dosing is sufficient for plant mass, co2 (if adding) and lighting then you will be fine with just sand :good:

Okay, thanks. I'm only planning on having plants that are easy to keep to start off with but after a while I may attempt some of the more challenging plants and invest in a decent CO2 system.
