hello!

i've recently setup a tropical aquarium, as i found it all very interesting and fascinating. i had researched a lot about it before i decided to set up, my tank has been up for about a month now, its planted and i added my first fish about a week ago, 2 red wagtail platies, i was wondering what i should do about the lighting though, i've left the lights constantly on since i set up and added plants. although my dad who used to also keep tropical fish said that i should turn them off at night? i have 2 lights in my aquarium a bright white daylight one and a blue moonlight one, i was just wondering. should i leave the moonlight lighting on over night or should i turn out all the nights in the night time, as i dont want to stress my fish or cause ny problems in my aquarium

thanks :)

You do need to turn your lighhts off at night :)

If you have more than six or seven hours light (certainly no more than eight), you'll just encourage algae growth. Fish also need the lights out at some point or they'll get stressed; don't forget they don't have eyelids they can close like we do!

thankyou very much for your help, i was confused as what to do at first. i also have a problem with one of my plants :( 'echinodorus rose' to be specific, on the leaves lots of black spots are starting to appear, i was just reading through some other posts on here, and kinda worked out it might be some kind of algae and that its down to keeping the lights on all the time, although im not entirely sure yet, but thankyou for your help :) !
