Planted 10 gallon

I have a empty ten I want to make planted and right now have 2 WPG with 20 watts (2 10 watt bulbs) of flourescent bulbs. If I need to get more light how would I do the have the screw in flourescent bulbs that are more powerful of would I have to upgrade my hood? Also I have Tahatin Moon Sand in it should I change this or mix it with some type of flourite? Next is what about fertilizers what are some you would recommend? Finally I was wondering about Co2 and if I went with DIY how do you regulate it or what are other options?

1) You would have to upgrade the ballast.

2) Not sure, tahitian moon sand looks great by itself it would be a shame to dirty up the color with laterite, which is like a substrate nutrient enhancer. I guess you could put a layer of it over a flourite base but the bimodal density distribution might cause some problems.

3) Fertilizers, maybe a little of some liquid ferts, but only if there's good growth already happening. Plus, with only 20w there's not much reason for them anyway.

4) Go DIY co2. That $140 "Carbo-plus" is just a $135 DIY deal IMO. If you want to spend big on co2 then go pressurized. And those "fizz factories" and "fizz tabs" are a total jipp. My intuition tells me that they're worthless. DIY doesn't really have "regulation" but really the problem to be concerned about is too much dissolved co2. DIY can take you up to 30ppm, the ideal CO2 level, but not much further so there's no reason to worry. it's perfect for the everyday planted person.
