Hey guys...another question.

I went by my LFS today because I need to retie some of my plants down. They were on smooth rocks before and the thread slipped off the rocks too easily. I came home with a few pieces of petrified wood and one rock piece. I had to mix and match a little to find something small enough. The small driftwood pieces at the store were just waaaayyyyy too big for what I wanted.

Is there any special process you guys would do with petrified wood other than giving it a good wash before putting it into the tank? Would you soak it like driftwood? Being petrified I'm assuming it wouldn't leech tannins would it?

Petrified wood is a fossil. It's basically just a quartz crystal, there is no actual "wood" left other than the shape. So just treat it like any rock you'd put in the tank and you'll be fine.

im intrigued, do you have any pics?

I can take some when I get home and post them this evening (U.S. time) I know they are naturally inert and I picked up 3 pieces of pterified wood and one piece of quartz rock for $2/lb. I walked out paying $2.18 after taxes. I will bury them in the gravel and keep the plant rhizomes exposed. It was cheaper than driftwood so far that I've found.

Here is what I picked up from the store. The left 3 pieces are petrified wood. 2 of them are 4" long to give them some scale.
