I have sand or gravel, or a mix, depends on the system. There's laterite in it too, but it's so old now, that I'm sure it's useless. :lol:

laterite does have a small CEC so it is doing something :)

After three years? Well, that's encouraging. :D

soil colloids are what give the substrate the negative charge, therefore allowing CEC to take place. As far as i know CEC should continue to take place, due to elements such as SO4- NO3- Cl- and PO3- etc in the water which would act as an anion, or stick to the surface of the colloids.

Perhaps Dave knows a bit more :)
