Im picking up my new tank tomarrow and would like to try a plant friendly substrate finally. I have cories who will be moved into this tank and was just wondering what is the best plant substrate to use with cories and there delicate whiskers.

I've always thought the eco complete and others have sharp edges and are rough? are there any that are smooth??

thanks

i think sand is best

nah I tried sand and hated it, I switched back to gravel after a couple months. I had black Tahitian Moon Sand and it worn down my cories whiskers as there was little peices of glass mixed it and the sand was overall very sharp and rough.

I also hated the fact I couldn't fully gravel vac my tank. Just a little bit on the top wasn't good enough for me so I got rid of the sand and went back to good ol black gravel that I can keep nice and clean. :)

I recently (this weekend) redid my tank with JBL AquaBasis on the bottom layer, and Black Roman Gravel on the top. The JBL produced a lot of red murkiness in the little bit of water that was in the bottom of the tank, but the roman gravel seems to have capped this off well, and there was no clouding when I refilled the tank. I like the look now, so will wait and see what the plants think of it too - lol

We use eco complete and our cories are perfectly fine with it. There aren't any (or well, many) rough edges, none that would hurt the cories at least.
