I'm interested in having live plants in my tropical 100 gallon community aquarium but most of the plants I try and promptly eaten by the fish--clown loaches, bala sharks, etc. Are there any particular plant species that tropical fish don't care for? Or that are at least more resilient to being chewed on? Thanks!

Amazon swords aren't tasty for most fish, theyre also harder to eat than most other plants because they have big tough leaves.

Bala sharks grow too big for your tank and need a minimum of 6. Clown loache are also the same. Maybe try getting some fish that are ok for your tank and plant it out then.

Hope this helps.

Anubias and Java Fern are good as they are tough leaved.

He said 100gallon, not 100 litre mate. They're fine in a 100gallon.

I do apologise. I'm blaming tiredness due to the kids keeping me awake half the night as they're sick. Maybe its just that I'm lazy and only glance too.

Again, huge apology.

Haha, doubt he's rushed out to give them in to his LFS or whatever anyway. You're not alone anyway, I've done it many times before-spent ages constructing a post and then when re-reading I notice and have to delete it.

At over a foot max size many people would consider Bala sharks too large for a 100 gallon. At best I would say the tank is minimum for this stock.

IME fish eating plants has a lot more to do with the main food being fed, not the type of plant. I have had plants do too well in my goldfish tanks. I only feed and recommend New Life Spectrum. The idea is that if they get everything they need from the food they won't have cravings for anything in the plants. There are still exceptions (both in individual fish and types of plants) but the type of food can have a drastic effect on how well the plants do.

I agree with the above, whether or not a 100G is suitable or not would depend on the dimensions.

No worries.

After years of dabbling in caring for an aquarium (mostly my parents) I am just now getting seriously interested in the hobby and I appreciate constructive criticism. I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can so I can have a healthy aquarium that fish will enjoy.

The aquarium is 100 gallons (not liters :p) and I don't know the exact dimensions offhand but the aquarium is fairly long. Granted the Bala Sharks dart from one end to the other in a matter of seconds. I currently have 3 of them at about 6-7 inches. I've read that they are better suited to groups of 5-6+ but at this point in their life cycle I'm not sure if I want to buy some more smaller ones or just leave them be. They seem to get along fairly well, although two of them do spar from time to time--although not to the point where injuries appear to be occurring.

I have been feeding them flakes daily and bloodworms every other day. What sort of food would you guys/gals recommend that I add to their diet to quench their desire to eat my plants?

I only feed and recommend New Life Spectrum Thera+A, and feed it exclusively. This has kept my goldfish from destroying plants, and I have even heard of one person with silver dollars in a planted tank on this food.
