Some plants like Ambulia, Ludwigia and the Hygrophillas do this. It is normal and nothing to worry about. With soft plants like Ambulia and Hygrophilla polysperma you can weigh down the stems and the roots will take hold in the gravel. Then you will get shoots growing upwards from the stem and it can develop into a wall type effect.
When the plant has been growing for a bit you can break off the stems with roots on and plant them in the gravel.

I really like that suggestion collin! Thats a great way to get a nice background with out buying a bunch of plants! I'll have to try that some time, will it work on all stem pants?
