I have a 10 US Gal tank that I bought from wal mart. Its heated and I keep the temp around 74 degrees F. Its got a fluorescent light but I'm not sure the wattage. The only thing printed on the "bulb" (is that the correct word?) is Eclipse. Its about 17" long if that helps. I have about an inch and half of gravel as a substrate. I was wondering if this would be suitable for a small live plant? I was thinking of trying a java fern because I hear they're pretty hardy. So what do you think?

Java fern, and pretty much any low-light plant should do fairly well.

But, I personally would stay away from potted plants (such as crypts), unless there was deeper gravel (about 3 inches total depth).

Java Fern and Moss will grow anywhere.

Also Hornwort, Anacharis are good starter plants although i do not like hornwort because the needles fall off a lot and go everywhere
