I'm starting a plant nursery sort of tank, I keep buying seeds for various plants (I really prefer them to buying live plants already) but I don't have much luck with growing them. I have 2 beautiful plants, better than most I see in stores, one very ragged one, and about 10 ungrowing seeds. i've decided I'm going togo buy some seeds, and put them in their own tank, not in my actually fish tank. I want to make this tank perfect for sprouting and growing plants to their full potential. Here are my questions:

Substrate- Yes or no? : Should I have seeds in no substrate, sand, or gravel?

Lighting: Lighitng 24/7, or half the day?

Plant foods: Is there anything I can buy to put in my nursery tank to help plants grow their best?

Amount: If I overstock a planting tank, will it effect plant growth?

I was going to grown them in a 5 gallon bowl tank (it's the easiest thing I have not in use) with about 3 inches of sand, so the roots can grow, but are easy to remove without them riping. Not planting, just gonna drop the bulbs in. I was going toactually TAKE the whole bowl outside durin the day if the temp is between 70 and 85, and leave it out unless it is storming badly. At night, I was going to bring it in and put it under a lamp. I was thinking about using regular plant food, and prior to moving it into the real fish tank, pitting the plant on it's OWN with no plant food for 1 week, with complete water changes daily, to clean it well so the fod does not harm my fish.

Are there any opinions on how to improve my plan of action? I was intending to overstock the tank badly, like.... 20-30 bulbs. Once the plant reaches about in inch long, I intend to move it into a different tank, so they can be spread out a bit, but follow the same strategy. I've notived after WEEKS, some bulbs I considered dead started to grow, so I'd wait 2 months before pitching any bulb, unless it was grownig mol.

hey there ! thats a pretty long qestion you got there! il do my best to answer

well you see aquatic plants are in some ways different to err.. (terrestrial) forgot the spelling land plants! :) but in terms of substrate... YES! it would also be nice to have a nutrient rich substrate...

im dont really agree with you with the seeds thingie and using them ... since i rarely see people using seeds to start of a whole planted tank :) so if you want to try out a small aquatic plant bowl, try getting live plants :) doworry.. i think youll have a harder time making the seeds grow then keeping the live plants alive...

btw what seeds are you using ??? just to clear things up

lighting... YES/ half of the day would be nice ... but it should be adequate for plant use (like daylight compact fluorescents). Putting the bowl outside for half of the day is also ok i guess :) algae might be a prob though :)

usually the people around here refer to overstocking as overstocking with animals or fish :) plants are usually er.... overgrown :p the problem with overdoing the number of plants in a small tank is keeping up with the requirements of the plants which are
1. Light
2. nutrition (from the water and soil)
3. c02

advice with the plant of action ...you dont have to listen to me but il give my adivice
An outdoor tank would be a good option.... use the outdoor tank not as a display tank but as a grow tank for your plants. get a few fast growing live plants and place them in your outdoor tank and let them spread there, harvest the plants if you need em :p (but its not that simple)
Read around on keeping plants healthy and their basic needs and research on the plants you are going to take care of :)

hope this helps

It is a little more difficult to grow seeds and bulbs, but I still much prefer it. It gives me a sense that I truly 'made' the tank. Also, I just like growing things ^^ I have one hand grown lily in my tank, and 2 grass-like plants that I'm unsure f the name of. I've got a few things I didn't grow as well, but I adore my hand growns much more! I am going to post smoe tank photos in the photo forum, if you want to see them. I'd love an identification of the thin leaf plant. I like the idea of a solely outdoor tank. Actually, I could use a large plastic bin in that case. I just might ^^ Thanks for the help
