Plant Pruning

Okay i am reading up on plants as i want a low light grassy carpet and a few have come up but say they need pruning so they dont grow upwards but sideways instead but how do you prune 2' under water

Usually the grassy carpet is strapped down to something, simply remove it from the tank, use a scissors to cut it to the desired length, and put it back in.
