hey, just looking for some advice, I am fairly new to planed aquariums and have a 20g thats had plants in it for about 5 months. Everything was doing great until recently they started to turn black and die. my lighting is quite low 15W floragrow that runs for 12 hrs/day. But I tryed to choose plants that don't require alot of light. I also use a palnt food supplement 1x per week. I just bought a CO2 unit to see if helps. also is aeration ok in a planted tank?

thanks for the help!

You don't really have a lot of light there, .75WPG, if I haven't forgotten math skills. I have, however, been able to grow crypts, anubias, java fern, and mosses with that low a light. Growth wasn't fantastic, but it was there. If you installed one more 15W tube, you' have 1.5WPG, which is much better and you can include some hardy stemplants without using CO2, though adding CO2 in that situation would only benefit the plants.

What plants did you have in there? Many plants from LFS are often not truely aquatic plants.

I don't have an airstone hooked to a pump, but I get a pretty good current from my filters and there is plenty of water circulation.

llj :)

In many cases, aeration causes too much surface agitation which drives of CO2. If this is the case in your tank, then adding CO2 won't be of much effect.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm going to look into some new lighting and add the CO2, just seems strange because everything was doing so well for the last 5 months. I'll have to find the names of the plants...can't remember, hopefully things get better?

Could you possibly get a close up of your plants? Maybe we can help you ID them. If I am correct that middle stem plant is rotala roundifolia and the stem plant to the left of that is anacharis, from what I can make out.

Hello

Remember that C02 and Light isnt the only thing plants require for growth. As for lights yes increasing them will be a good idea.C02 you dont really need even with 1.5 WPG but as they have said it will not harm to do and then you know for sure the plants have all teh c02 they need.

The other thing you have to look into is fertz in your tank?Check if your plants is not dying of some sort of lack of food.

Hope this helped.
