Plant Health Improvement?

Just wondering, my plants are currently in standard gravel about 1" thick.

i'm looking at changing to black sand, would this be better?

my plants are slowly dying i think

Sand is just as inert as gravel and will make no difference to the health of your plants. You need to look at the Planted Aquarium Resource centre at the top of the page (aka PARC)! That should give you some excellent pointers.
