ok, so my plants turned up from java today i am mid plant at the moment and was wondering if you should take out the carbon pad when adding the plant food. the stuff i have is supposed to be slow releasing so i am confused please help

Yes definately, the carbon will remove the trace nutrients you add, especially iron, so the plants wont get any.
