I used to have a brackish tank and next year ill have my own apartment so i plan a nice low[ish] maintenance freshwater setup up.
tank size: aprox 30 gal
substrate:sand and rocks
filtration: one power filter, maybe a sponge filter, and a the pneumatic filters that is a grate under the substrate (cant remember the name)
stock ideas:
Guppys ( two or more of either neon blue tux, red fire, lyretail)
hifin lyretail sowrdtail
ghost flass cat
silver hatchet
Rainbow crab-[i will talk about this more in a second]
Blue lobster crayfish (Cherax tenuimanus)- [i will talk more about this as well]
As to the Crustaceans: i would only pick one of the two mentioned above as i know they would fight each other in a tank of this size. Many people say rainbow crabs are terrestrial but they fair well on both land and in water if they have access to both ( see this video and many others http/wn.com/Rainbow_Crab. I have also seen many videos of rainbows with many small fish and they seemed indifferent to the fish. If i were to get a rainbow crab i would either increase my tanks height to allow rocks that come out of the water so it can surface as needed without escape, OR i would add an acrylic air chamber it could access that will have an air stone supplying air to it that will bubble out lightly for a nice air exchange (just like in this video! but mine will be larger obviously. http/www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jdUv2riTplg#!).
Questions:
1)How does this setup sound?
2)Has anyone ever had issues with these crustaceans attacking fish?
3)WHERE can i find a rainbow crab for sale? [i can't find them anywhere locally or online, i live in Ohio]
4)Add any comments you'd like. i'd really appreciate input on this! I've been through many forums with little to no help!
