Why do people write pl*co instead of pleco?

I think it's an internet superstition is that if you spell pleco out, the plecostomus will die.

I always said Pleco though, and mine are fine.

Why do people write pl*co instead of pleco?

It's a superstition thing, it is said if you spell Pl*co with the E yours will die. I picked it up in another forum, and it just stuck.

I once asked the same quesition on another forum and this was the response :

"Years ago on the mailing list that was first used to discuss catfish over the internet, there developed a superstition that if you typed the word pleco without the *, your fish would die. It's carried on through today, where the forum is programmed to help you keep your plecos safe!"

I too assumed it was a rude word somewhere in the world and that it was edited automatically.

I always wondered why too, and then one day I stumbled upon this story.

Pl*co?

With the advent of email, the internet and particularly newsgroups, aquarists at all levels began talking about their plecos with an interesting side effect. According to online lore, an incident occurred when someone discussed their pleco in a newsgroup and the fish promptly died. The discussion group surmised there was an online curse and the pl*co superstition was born. The belief is that if your star out the "e" in pleco when you write pleco, then your beloved suckermouth will be delivered from all aquatic evils.

Generally, if people are asking advice about their PLEC on forums, it's probably because it's already on its last legs...or fins...which is why it dies...not 'cos they type pleco rather than pl*co!


(if I asked for a pleco at any of the LFS round here they'd look at me like I asked for a flying fish!) PLEC!

EDIT:

BTW...This is my largest (common) PLEC...below and to the left...he just went belly up as I typed this post!

Yeah right...and my Platys are currently playing with the ouja board I bought them for their 21st birthday
