Hi, is it me, or do a lot of the bettas for sale appear to have bent spines? Is that normal for some types of bettas? Also, some have very brown heads, isn't that a sign of illness?

Can't say I've noticed myself but bent spines are not a good thing and definitely something to avoid. As for brown heads.....Can't say I've seen this either but it doesn't sound very pleasant.

A brown or black head is the natural color of the betta's head. For a betta with a colored head, you'll want to look for what's called a "mask". That mean the color comes up and over the head and it's not dark like it normally would be.

I haven't noticed the bent spines either so I can't comment on that one.

Seemed like whenever my betta's head turned brown, he got sick.

a few of my bettas have brown heads, alot of em have masks apperently.
