Do people fill the tank until it touches the top rim of the tank? Or do people generally leave a gap like filling the tank 95%

it depends on the fish, and airation. If your trying to airate the water better id leave it down, or if the fish is a known jumper. other than that keep it up. I keep mine up.

Well to be honest ... he is a little bit of a jumper and when really startled he can already hit the lid and its 2 inches below the black rim.

Was just thinking the more water I could get in there the less likely the effects of amonia will effect him

instead of filling it up more just change out more water at a time. that way its safe from hurting itself or ending up on the floor and you still keep the levels low.

Yeah I know what your saying I just can't stop thinking about how much extra water it would be if I just added those 2 inches ... thats a ton of water.

We are definantly looking at an extra 30litres etc.

The reason people leave a gap between the water and top of the aquarium is to allow gas exchange to take place (CO2 leaving the water and Oxygen entering). Also if you fill the water right up it is likely to spill over the edges creating water marks on the glass and soaking the carpet and stand below.

Thank you ALEXF and CFC for taking the time to response to this post.
