Piranha Caught In River

Anyone see this story in the newspapers? A boy was fishing and caught a piranha. It was alive so he put it back but later saw it floating dead in the water. Some heartless b**d must have dumped it in the river. Poor fish.

People catching piranhas/pacus in local waters is actually fairly common, espically in warmer climates. If you have ever been fishing in Florida chances are you have caught a piranha or pacu before. There are actually thriving and breeding species of piranha in Florida, it's a shame what it does to the environment

It's not that the fish cant adapt well, it's that they often disrupt the ecosystem, making it hard for native species to thrive.

I might have not said that correctly, but hopefully some people know what I was meaning to say.. lol

Yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying, Vancouver. Because it's so true, and it doesn't just happen with fish, it happens with mammals, too, like people releasing cats, dogs, rabbits, etc. into the streets.

The releasal of alien species of life into ecosystems is second only to destruction of habitat for making species become extinct. For instance, in Lake Victoria, 200 species of cichlid went extinct in just a few years after the Nile Perch was released there and in my recent trip to Hawaii, I learned that 80% of the original bird species are extinct, mostly due to introduced species of animals. Also, some people did a survey in San Francisco bay (were we stopped on the way to Hawaii) by taking a rock from the bay and weighing the mass of native versus alien species on the rock. 90% of the mass was of alien species

What will become of this planet if this behaviour continues? Problem is, it's basically inevitable. Wheneer we travel, we are bound to bring something with us.
