Hey everyone, i know that all female guppies have a gravid spot even if they are not pregnant. I was just wondering, if when i turn the light on, the gravid spot is pink but then after a short while it turns to black does this mean it is the fry moving to the back of the belly? Is it also possible for this to happen to a 3 1/2 month old guppy?
Thanx for any help.

sometimes the light can chage the color of the gravid spot just like you explained but im not sure about the 3 1/2 months thing.

don't know if guppies are the same as platies on this but platies and mollies can breed from around 3 months so it's probably the same with guppies. don't know if yours is pregnant tho. wait a couple of weeks and monitor the size of the fish.

I'll say it again, guppies make rabbits look like monks by comparison. ;) The females seem to be capable of making whoopie much younger than the males. Or maybe it's just my guppy males, but they really don't seem to catch on to "hey those are females, hubba hubba! :hyper: " until they are 6-9 months old minimum. Maybe I have retarded males. Anyways, your observation that the fry seem to move towards the light sounds right on the money. I bet you are right about that. Thinking about all those fry moving...criminy that must tickle the momma guppy!

I can say that the younger they are the smaller the number of fry they seem to have. The older they get the more babies show up. Congrats on being a proud guppy parent-to-be.

The black spot means she is developing fry and these are the eyes of the fry ....... Pink simply means she if full of eegs that are ready too be fertilized .... the fry are pretty cramped in there but I suppoes they could move in circles not throughout the mom

Right thanx everyone for your help but let me get this straight, if the gravid spot is pink when the light is off but then turns black when i turn the light on, then she is deffinately pregnant? Thats what is happening at the moment, i turn on the light and first of all there are a few little black spots then more and more appear untill the whold of her gravid spot is black.
I just want to make sure cus in 3 years i have had two batches of fry from any fish! I think it might be because i dont add salt so i went out a bought some today. Other than that i dont know what i might be doing wrong. -_-

i cant see it being that you dont add salt, but seen as you have it now..no harm in adding it..unless you have loaches or cories. I dont really know much about guppies and whatever, but if the gravid spot is going from pink to black like you said...i think its safe to assume she is probably pregnant.

Hey DA!
I could try and get a pic but they are fast little things and the chances of is being blurry are likely. I'll try anyway. :D

Salt may not hurt them but wont help them in general ..... I would sya you are seeing here organs ... Alot of times they are very clothes and can be confused

yer its deffinately cos she is pregnant cos i had a female and posted the same post acouple of months ago then afew weeks later she gave birth to alotta fry, you are right that it is the fry turining from looking at the mums head to looking outwards- so u see their eyes. They do this beacause theyre attacted to the light and therefore face outwards
Good luck
