I have 3 pineapple swordtails (1 male, 2 females) that I bought 3 days ago. They are in my 10G quarentine tank, along with a male and female black swordtail, a dwarf gourami and 2 otos. I acclimated them for over an hour when I brought them home before releasing them. None of the pinapples have eaten anything or even shown the slightest interest in eating.

The 2 black swordtails are eating well and getting along fine, as is the gourami and the otos. One of the pineapples has the vertical fin on her back clamped down. The few times she has unclamped it, I noticed a small cotton like patch on the fin. I believe that is columnaris, correct?

All of the pineapples seem pretty lethargic, though they seem to become more active after I turn the lights off, still not eating as far as I can tell, though. The male is pretty much just minding his own business, whereas he would normally be bugging the snot out of the females. The one with the fuzz is mostly hanging out at the top of the water, primarily behind the water return from the filter.

Anyhow, the other 2 swordtails have no visible ailments. I'm concerned because I've had swordtails in the past and they've all died within a few days of bringing them home - and not eating was my first indication something was wrong with them before. I went to a different LFS to get these ones (after waiting a few months), hoping that I would have better luck.

My water parameters are nominal - 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, <10 nitrates. I've been doing 20% to 50% water changes per day. The tank is moderately planted with a few places to hide.

My questions are these:

Should I pull out the swordtail with the fuzz and treat it with some maracyn?

Is there a common problem with new fish that will prevent them from eating? (keeping in mind that these fish went through the very same acclimation process as the black swordtails, the otos and the gourami, who are all doing well)

Other suggestions?

My intention is to move them into my 55G tank, but I don't want to do that until I reasonably sure they're not sick. At the same time, I feel like part of their problem may be that they feel cramped in the 10G....

I forgot to mention that the other female had a slightly worn tail fin, so I added a dose of melafix. As I understand it, melafix will also knock out columnaris, correct?

I do have maracyn 1 and 2. I think I'm going to pull them out into a separate bucket and treat them there. I'd hate to expose the other fish to the medication if they aren't sick.

Would it be better to go with a non-medication approach like salt dips?

Seen it all to often members using melafix for columnaris and they just go down hill even faster.
It not a med for columnaris, the desease can soon wipe a whole tank out fast so you need to get on top of it fast.
All melafix is good for is cuts and wounds.

Treat the whole tank, maracyn one and two for columnaris in the us, it shouldn't knock your filter, i will get you a article.

You will have to put up with madonna music in the background.

I just got home and found that 2 of the 3 were dead. The third is still hovering at the top, not eating. I imagine that it's just a matter of time before she dies too. Man, this is frustrating. Anybody have any ideas of what could be wrong? I'm assuming it's something specific to those fish, as all the other fish are doing great.

I've decided to go ahead and treat the other one with maracyn and maracyn 2. I don't have a lot to lose, since she's probably going to die anyway.

Columnaris soon can wipe a tank out, go in with the maracyn one and two, good luck, turn temp down to by two degrees.

I only had a few minutes before so I put her in a bucket for the maracyn treatment. So far, I see no other signs of problems with the other tank mates. They're active, eating and have no visible problems. I'm going to keep a close eye on them for the next few days.

I believe if I get more swordtails that I'm going to put them in with some maracyn to start. I know that probably sounds bad, but I really do want to have a pineapple.

try some peas too :) we have 3 pineapple swordtails and after a suggestion by wilder (thanks ) we give them peas every couple of days , they may eat that , or try some brine shrimp as its one of their favourite snacks :) will help the fish if it eats i imagine :)

I have tried the BBS. They are/were completely uninterested in food. What's really concerning to me is that I've now had 2 batches of swordtails from 2 different stores several months apart and the EXACT same thing happened to them - they didn't eat, some got fuzzy, and all died.

The one in the hospital bucket is still alive and swimming. I'd really like for her to make it, but based on previous experience, it doesn't seem likely.

As I expected, she didn't make it :( Fortunately, the black swordtails that I bought at the same time as these are doing great, and the mollies I bought with them had babies.
