Mod Edit: Fixed the link :) Ken

Nice rams! They look the same to me... except maybe that the first is a female and the second is a male (I think).

First one is a bolivian ram, second is the more common venezuelan, the more common has the violet spots around the gills and the bolivian has that lovely red pink instead. I have a pair of each, lovely fish :)

Thanks for the help Ken :D

David the're are both males
Ok then. Sorry I have virtually no experience in sexing rams, but have been led to believe that males are more colorful. That was what fuelled my assumption. Now I know that they are a different strain, thanks jflowers.

nah it's cool. :p You gotta learn to laugh at yourself once in a while, it makes life more fun. so, how do you sex rams?

David and Strontium,

I'm in the same boat, and having trouble sexing a couple of my rams as well (my others were obvious in the store as I saw them pairing). I've read everything I could find on this. Most say:

Males - longer third dorsal, more pointed and longer anal and dorsal fins

Females - short third dorsal, rounder anal and dorsal fins, spangles on the black spot at the side, pink belly. One site mentioned gold bars on either side of the black spot, but I don't know if that's accurate.

Mine show confusing traits. I also read an article in which the author said sometimes it's almost impossible to tell the sex until the pair off/ actually spawn...
