Hi studz! after our little conversation the other day I've been wanting to see some pics of all your fish and I must say that I'm not disappointed!! they are gorgeous! Whats the fish in pic 197, the one with the lovely blue eye? I only know a little bit about general community fish I'm afraid, so I don't know what that one is but it's beautiful!

That is a Satanoperca leucosticta, I have three of these, often seen as Geophagus (which is their old classification) or Earth Eaters.

glad you like my fish :)

Hmm... I always thought that the leucosticta and jurupari were different! :p

EDIT: This is a great website that explains and tells you how to identify the different Satanoperca species. Apparently, scientists aren't really sure if there are different species, but research points to the fact that there are, but it is up to you to figure out which one you have! :)

They are very similar species the jurupari and the leucosticta. The main difference I have been told between these two species collections is that jurupari tend to have a blue sheen to them, but this could be a colour morph.

After looking through the site you linked to I do believe that the species I have is "Satanoperca cf. leucosticta from the lower Rio Branco" which they identify as true leucosticta. All the other species on that site have different body shapes, or colourations, or have eye spots.

This is the image from that about site:

And here is a pic of opne of mine:

As you can see the coplourations and pattern are the same, the only difference is the length of the extensions on pectoral fins, this maybe a sign of male and female?

So there we go, I do believe they are Satanoperca leucosticta

Sorry I sounded arguementative. No matter what, your fish is beautiful!

lol, no worries :) its all about learning and finding out, and oyther experience helps other ;)

I've noticed today that two of specimins I have have started to develop eye spots near the tail, the other one hasnt. Sexual dimorphism, species dimorphism? who knows? but the other one with no eye spot seem to have a very skinny caudal peduncle. you can see the end of the tail bone/spine.. or so it seems...

:good:
