Well i already have my £600 3 ft tank and cabinet with my community fish and just picked up a used tank on ebay was only £50 couldnt resist.

Just need a cabinet to put it on now lol

Just wondering what fish could house in this tank..im keeping my community tank and tried africans in it but as its only 3 ft i though it was too short.

Now the only problem with this tank is its only 18 inch tall by 14 inch wide but its 50 inch long ( like just over 4ft)

Guessin its less litre volume than my taller wider other tank. Say about 160 litre im guessing.

What fish could i keep?

Would malawi cichlids prefer length over depth.

Advise thanks.

Give us a chance, some of us are busy people.

Lots of things prefer length over depth. Nothing too bulky in size or height, as they'll be restricted by turning room but the length lends itself to territorial fish such as malawis.

Depends a lot on your water as well. Personally I'd be very tempted by a bunch of apistos in a tank like that. They won't care about the depth and will enjoy the territory options.

I keep suggesting it to people, but long thin tanks would make great river tanks with a strong flow running the length of the tank.

Cheers pal sorry didnt mean to come across bossy lol.

Im definitly going to have my spray bar across the length of the tank and maybe my powerhead across the other way to try and create a circular as much as i can flow.

When you say river tank what kinds of fish and what decor is included...

Anyone hazard a guess as to how many litres my tank would be. Also your saying malawis would be ok in this size tank?

Does length matter more than volume ?

The back of the tank lid there is access to run the pipes for my external canister filter.....once i get a cabinet to house it ha

Measure it up in cm, length, width and depth and work it out? No way for us to tell you just by looking!

For most fish, they prefer length as height does not add to surface area or oxygen exchange. Some fish, like tall, slow moving angels, need height but I would plump for a long tank any day.

The tank is 50 inch long, 14 inch wide by 18 inch tall.

So if run my tetra ex1200 external flowing lengthways would the tank be suitable for lake malawi cichlids.

If so would peacocks and haps be better than mbuna or is it personal preference. Thank you for your help.

Nice shoal of Leopard Dannios!

With a good strong current across the length of the tank. They will love it.
