One of my 20gal tanks which is the non-planted one has a reading of 5ppm phosphate. My kit reads only up to 5 so it could be higher. I think when I started the tank I made a big mistake. It has a big piece of driftwood which needed to be held down. I got a piece of lexan glass and drilled holes in it and tied the bottom of the driftwood to the glass. The glass was exactly the same size as the bottom area of the tank. I think there is "dead" water between the bottom of the aquarium and the bottom of this lexan glass sheet. This aerobic (spelling) buildup could be causing phosphate spike? I was thinking of redoing the entire tank anyway into planted with just a big rock to hold down the wood. Ideas anyone?
