I decide to go to my sister inlaws today and test her water to see if it was better than my own supply she lives about 8 mile away

I tested for ph and nitrates

my tank water which im still cycling
ph is 7.4mg/l
nitrates 80mg/l- 100mg/l

my tap water is 7.6mg/l
nitrates 20mg/l-40mg/l

sister inlaws tap water
ph7.8
nitrates 0mg/l

so would it be better for my fish when i get them to use her water rather than my own :shout:

Hi RedDevil,

I suppose technically your sister-in-law's water is "better" than yours because the nitrate level is lower. pH is much the same.

However, research suggests that most fish will tolerate nitrate levels of up to 400ppm with no adverse effects, some fish up to around 1000ppm. Therefore, the benefit in using her water is minimal, to say the least. I wouldn't bother with the hassle and expense of transporting it to be honest.

If you are planning to keep Discus, it may be an issue, but not necessarily. Otherwise, your own water will be just fine!

Cheers :good:
