pH 7.7 is slightley alkaline, neutral is 7.0. If you got some bog wood in the tank, that would probably be enough for it to be considered neutral. Bog wood will slightely lower pH. However if you are thinking of african cichlids, alkaline is good for them. What have you got fish wise at the moment. Also do you know the pH of water from lfs where you got any fish. Consistent pH is much better than non consistent. Many fish will adapt slightely if consistent. Don't try chemcal lowering, it will be very inconsistent.
