Does anyone keep discus here in Herts UK. If so are they difficult due to the water conditions?
Read they like water soft. The water here is above that which is good for them.
I am a beginner and they do say some experience is necessary.
I have time but thought I'd ask if anyone has tried them as they are very expensive and require a lot of attention.
I would also like your views. Ta

hi tetraqueen. your correct our water is far from ideal for discus. if you were going to keep them you would need to use RO water which envolves buying a filter to plumb into your tap. you can buy it fro mthe LFS by the litre but not really practical for water changes.

you also need to be very precise with your water parameters with discus. get it wrong and you'll be loosing £75 fish all day long.

generally a discus tank comes a little later on in the hobby. i've been at it just over 2 years and i would still be nervous of keeping a discus tank. although i could probably manage it i would be constantly worrying about it.

I am grateful for your honest reply. Thanks.
I have been mulling it over as I like them so much but really I think I will think twice. The water here is really not right and you confirmation I am right sort of sorts me out.

In Welwyn Garden City here and we toyed with the idea of Discus too but like you say the water is far from ideal and from what I understand they are not a beginers fish :-(
