It seems that half the filter in my new tank from the PFK subscription has carbon in a little box. I think I remember reading on here somewhere that this should be removed. If I remember correctly, why should it? and what should I replace it with?

it's debatable.

carbon is very good at removing unwanted medications or toxins from the water, however it's only active for a very short period of time after which it should be removed from the filter.

as it doesn't contribute much to every day filtration and needs replacing so frequently myself and many others choose not to have it in the filter 24/7 and to have something like a sponge in there which will add more to the biological filtration, then i keep some carbon to hand and if i have to medicate a tank i will add it to the filter after the course of medication has finished then remove it 24hrs later.

it's really your choice but personally i'd say take it out.

:)

I agree - took mine out of the PFK filter, but have kept it just in case...
