I check petfinder a few times a month, just to see if there is any animal in really dire straights that I could lend a hand to. Thier classified adds are where I found my parakeets, and where I've helped several friends find great family pets.

Recently, I noticed in NY and PA's petfinders, fish being listed as "reptiles" since petfinder has no fish option. It got me thinking, because I wondered if more people might put fish up for adoption instead of returning them or culling them if there was simply an option to put them up.

Do you think it would be worth trying to get people on fish forums to email Petfinder's public adress and request that they add fish to the options of animals, at least in the classifieds section? If we could get a bunch of people together at once, they may consider it, especially since people have been occasionally posting them anyways.

Just a thought...

I think its a great idea. I will gladly email. Did you find the public address? I will go search too but have to leave shortly.

Alot of people need to give up their pets for a number of reasons. Why not add fish on there? Bet there would be a lot more happy fish.

Is Petfinder for-profit? If so then you may not have such good luck as there really isn't that much money in it for them I wouldn't think. (I could be wrong)

That's a great idea! Fish are pets too, after all
I'll definitely email as soon as someone finds the address...

I was looking but all I can find is an email address of pets@petfinder.com and a link to http://www.petfinder.com/publicreceptiondesk.html#question . If you go to the bottom of the page it has an area for more questions. It does state on their info page that" They are only a directory of homeless pets and pet adoption organizations." It also states that in order to register with them the organization must be non-for-profit and that there must be a person responsible for all communication with Petfinder. Maybe they could still add a section to the classifieds area?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Unless a fish rescue magically appears and registers, they'd probably leave them off of the list of species from rescues, but I'm thinking they probably could add them to classifieds if enough people express interest to thier "questions" email posted by kimbowee.
