Hi,

I'm part way through cycling my first tank, (day 10 to be exact), and have been measuring Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate using a Nutrafin Master Test Kit (Liquid). So far I'm quite happy with the readings, but last night and again today whilst testing for nitrites something weird has happened.

To start with, from my reading around I would have expected ammonia to drop gradually, (which it didn't) and nitrite to drop quickly after being high for a while (which it isn't - it's declining slowly). Typical!

Anyway, I've been leaving the nitrite test to develop for two minutes each time, (as the instructions advise), it's just that last night and again this evening on the cusp of two minutes instead of remaining a light(ish) shade of pink it is going a [to put it nicely] urine yellow colour (similar to the colour indicative of high ammonia in the ammonia test.)

My question is, what the hell does that mean!? If there are no nitrites surely it should go clear like the ammonia test does? Help!

Obviously these tests aren't very popular. I think I'll change to a more reliable brand...

Well I seem to be talking to myself here, but hope it might be useful to someone searching the forums one day, and it helps me to get my thoughts in order by getting everything down "on paper".

I am peeved to say the least! As mentioned above I'd noticed that my nitrite test was doing something it wasn't supposed to be doing, which got me questioning the reliability of the other tests from the Nutrafin kit. As a result I purchased an API Master Test Kit this afternoon and re-tested across the board. My Ammonia instead of being 0ppm as the previous test was reading, was actually 8ppm, and my Nitrite 0ppm (I didn't know how to interpret that for the previous test anyway).

I did an immediate 50% water change which has brought my Ammonia down to 4ppm.

Incidently, I e-mailed Nutrafin yesterday regarding the strange test result for Nitrite and received a reply telling me that I wasn't rinsing my test tubes enough! [I'm sorry, but 2 - 3 minutes under a warm running tap & a final swill with RO water for each test tube isn't enough to get rid of the reagents?? - I find that hard to believe!]

I will never buy another Nutrafin product again!

Anyway, just when I thought my cycling was going tickety-boo I've been brought back down to Earth with a bump... to say I'm disheartened is an undersatement. I don't think I'll ever see fish in my tank at this rate!

Awww...I'm terribly sorry. I can't imagine how disheartening that is! :( I've never used Nutrafin so I couldn't offer any advice or observations. I've always used the API test kit and I think it works great. Best of luck with cycling. Hopefully, the rest will be a breeze....

:fish:

Thanks bymauldin,

Nutrafin is a division of Hagen, which itself is part of the Eheim group so I would have expected their tests to be spot on! I'll be sticking with the API tests from now on...

Hmm - my sister's recent problems with her fishless cycle could also be connected to the Nutrafin test kit. I might suggest to her that she abandons that test kit and gets an API one like mine.

Irf.

awwww what a shame, i've never heard bad reports about the nutrafin test kits, not tried them myself though.

but just be grateful that you are getting the right readings now, at least you've not put any fishies in danger putting them in an uncycled tank
