i plan to attempt a planted tank for next project and so i have started researching wat the best substrate would be, i plan to have a community tank of non aggressive fish, i was wondering if anyone had really good success with a particular type or layered substrate

The is no "perfect substrate". The substrate you use depends more on the type of plants and amount of growth you want to achieve. So are you planning on growing any plants in particular?

nutrient rich plant substrates is always gonna be better for rooting plants, you can go about this three different ways.

1: if you are already set up, using sand or gravel and no undergravel filter, use root tabs. (also good for root feeders like amazon swords.)

2: layered substrates, many brands and many different techniques, always capped with either gravel or sand, i prefer the look of black sand and gravel myself.

3: stand alone substrate, brands like ADA aquasoil, Flourite, Eco-Complete, and theres a lot of hype about a new cheap substrate called akadama which is actually bonsai soil, do a search on the forum for some of these names and you will get loads back, i myself use eco complete and cant fault it, its great if you replant a lot, which i tend to do.
